Breaker tripped — when to call an electrician
A breaker that flips once may be doing its job. One that trips again right after a reset — or will not stay on — is a fault you should not force.
Do this first
- Unplug or shut off the loads on that circuit, then try one firm reset with dry hands. If it trips again immediately, leave it off.
- Red Cross: a tripped breaker can mean damaged wiring. Do not keep resetting it — call a qualified electrician to inspect before you turn it back on (Red Cross: Checking Your Home’s Utilities).
- If you smell hot insulation, see sparks, or the panel cover is warm, shut the main only if you can reach it from a dry spot. Never stand in water to work a panel (CDC electrical hazards).
- Smoke, flame, or a burning plastic smell → leave and call 911 first. Hire later.
When to call an electrician
Call when the same breaker trips repeatedly, trips with nothing plugged in, the handle will not stay reset, or the panel buzzes or smells hot. Call for AFCI/GFCI trips you cannot clear safely after loads are removed.
